Day 8 - Fri, 17 Sept - Nice

A sleep in today - we have a luxury room at the Boscato Hotel situated close to the Promenade on the Mediterranean. But with so much to see we were up reasonably early and enjoyed a sumptuous breakfast. The architecture in Nice is consistent with Italian old worlde stucco, shutters and wrought iron, as Nice was held by Italy until 1860. The town square of Nice was only a minute from our hotel and was large in size and surrounded on 3 sides by beautiful buildings about 5 storeys high painted in apricot/pink with blue/green shutters. Seven modern sculptures of humans in sitting positions sat high above the square on pedestals and at night illuminated soft shades of green, blue and pink, etc that change colours to the next shade. Quite stunning.

Nice Flower Market
Beautiful flower arrangements

Our first task of the morning was to find an internet provider, a challenging task as the use of the internet is not a priority here - there is so much more fun on offer in this vibrant place. We strolled to the daily flower and food market, renowned for its beautiful flower arrangements. As most French live in apartments and don't have the opportunity to enjoy a garden, flowers provide a beautiful substitute. The choice of flowers and their arrangements are the most beautiful I have ever seen.

St Paul de Vence

St Paul de Vence

Beautiful - St Paul de Vence
In the afternoon, we visited the medieval hill-top town of St Paul de Vence. A drive along the 'Grande' corniche road gave those with a fear of heights a frightening experience. We visited Fragonard, a local perfumery where we were shown how perfume, creams and soaps are made. By the time we left here I had lost all sense of smell and could not discern one fragrance from another. Definitely not a place I could work in!

At night, we dined at a local restaurant where our choices were: Entree - Pate, Salad or Mediterranean fish soup: Main - Salmon, Veal or Seaford Voulavant: Sweets - Chocolate Mousse or Cream Caramel. The wine was unlimited and flowed freely resulting in a very merry bus ride back to the Hotel where we gathered on the open top floor for a night cap while taking in the lights of Nice and its surrounds including, plane spotting - as Nice central is in the direct flight path for the airport.
