Day 11 - Mon 20 Sept - Biarritz to Bordeaux

In the morning we had a scenic drive to the top of a Pyrenees mountain where we caught the funicular train to ascend through the picturesque mountains, where sheep and wild horses graze. The peak is 3000' above sea level. At the top we were served their speciality of hot chocolate made from boiled milk with melted chocolate - a good thing I am on the cholestoral tablets, which I hope will be working very hard while we are in France eating cheeses, eggs and pastry! We had 360 degree views over Spain and France and the Atlantic.

We returned to Biarritz for lunch and we dined at an exquisite Cafe called Miremont. It was established in 1872 and on the top level has a picture window overlooking the beach and promenade. Stuart had club crab sandwich and I had quiche lorraine.

We then travelled to Bordeaux to a Chateux/Golf Course Resort where we will stay for two days. We then went to a nearby winery called 'Chateux Anvy' for wine tasting and dinner. This winery specialises in red wines and has been in the same family from 1157. The service, decor and food was magnificent. Old wine making implements were hung around the barn like structure - we sat around round tables with cane chairs.

Our meal consisted of Asparagus soup, duck & potatoes, and sweets were pears poached in red wine, followed by cheese and grape sauce.

We all had a wonderful time and the Aussies entertained on the way home with any songs we could remember the words to.
